Blue is the New Yellow

Selfridges’ new initiative – Project Ocean – is one of the most stylish recent campaigns. Throughout May and the rest of the summer, the department store dedicates its windows, shop floors and events to the protection of the seas and oceans. Last week I attended one of their talks, organized by Selfridges’ creative director Alannah Weston. The talked aimed to raise awareness in the public and to confront the issues of the two oppositions in the conflict - fishing companies and ecologists. In terms of fashion there’s plenty going on – Katherine Hamnett has created a capsule T-shirt collection, which would raise money for the creation of a Marine Protected Area in the Philippines. The jeweller Steven Webster and shoe designer Tabitha Simmons have also contributed to the project with their signature pieces, which could be purchased exclusively at Selfridges this month. Stop and think about the conservation of the sea.
